Tonga is being warned to prepare for strong winds and heavy rains associated with poor visibilities and thunderstorms.
The warning has been issued this afternoon at 1pm by Tonga’s Fua’amotu weather forecasting centre.
It says “strong wind warning remains inforce for all of Tonga land areas”.
When the warning was issued, “a trough of low pressure lies slow moving over Tonga”. “Associated cloud and rain affects the group”, it said.
Forecast to midnight tomorrow for all of Tonga, Met Service says “moderate north to northeast winds, becoming fresh to strong this afternoon. Overcast with occasional rain, heavy at times with possible isolated thunderstorms”.
Meanwhile Pam the fatal strongest cyclone to have hit South Pacific since the last 30 years has caused an “unbelievable destruction” in Vanuatu today.
The death toll was still uncertain but Pam was believed to have also caused widespread casualties.
Reuter’s report says one person was confirmed dead in Papua New Guinea, where the storm passed earlier.
