The Pacific Energy Summit 2013 will be held in Auckland from March 25-27 this year following a 2 days event in Tonga on March 21-22 to see Tonga Energy Roadmap in action.
Statement signed by Hon Murray McCully and Andris Piebalgs says that, “The Summit is a joint initiative designed to enable Pacific countries and territories to work with development partners to take a substantive step towards their goals of implementing energy efficiency and renewable energy initiatives, with a special focus on generation and distribution of electricity.
“In an era of increasing concern about the effects of climate change, renewable energy and energy efficiency have become key issues for the Pacific Island countries.
“Dependence on fossil fuels is a major burden for Pacific countries and territories. It generates very significant costs, both economically and environmentally. While we have seen recent progress towards renewable energy and energy efficiency in the region, we still need to do better.
The Summit will be an opportunity for development partners to announce their intentions and pledge their support to the Pacific Islands. We wish to use this opportunity to ensure that we work cooperatively to fund the next stage of energy development in the region. The Summit will include an Investment Showcase to connect development partners and Pacific countries with private sector investors and investment banks.”
