Strong wind warning for Tonga

Strong winds are on the forecast for many parts of Tonga tonight.

A gale warning remains in force for Tongatapu,’Eua, Ha’apai and Vava’u coastal waters.

Severe weather warnings are in place for Tongatapu,’Eua, Ha’apai and Vava’u land areas, Fuʻamotu Met Services said.

Situation:

A ridge of high pressure extends onto Tonga from the southeast directs an east to southeast windflow over Tonga.

Meanwhile a trough of low pressure lies over Tongatapu and ‘Eua spreading to Ha’apai and Vava’u associated clouds and rain with strong winds affects the group by this evening.

Forecast to midnight tomorrow:

For the Niuas:

Light to moderate east to northeast winds variable at times cloudy periods with possible light showers.

For Tongatapu,’Eua, Ha’apai and Vava’u.

Light to moderate east to northeast winds variable at times.

Winds tending fresh to strong east to southeast gusty at times.

Cloudy and overcast with occassional rain possibly heavy at times with squally thunderstorms from tonight.
