Pasifika Festival 2013: Experience the unique cultures from our neighbouring Pacific Islands.

The 21st Pasifika Festival will take place on 9 and 10 March 2013 at Western Springs Park.

The Pasifika Festival is one of Auckland’s longest running major events and attracts tens of thousands of people each year to Western Springs Park for a fantastic weekend to celebrate Auckland’s Pacific heritage.

Voted in 2008 as Auckland’s most important arts event*, Pasifika Festival regularly attracts large, vibrant crowds of locals and visitors keen to sample the culture, music and food of the Pacific.

Pasifika Festival began life at Western Springs in 1992 with just a few thousand attendees and has evolved into a significant event that features on Auckland’s major events calendar.

Pacific Island Villages will be dressed in a uniquely traditional fashion, showcasing island food,  craft, weaving, tattooing and carving techniques from respective island nations of the Cooks Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Niue, Samoa, Tahiti, Tonga, Tokelau, Tuvalu and Aoteoroa.

Saturday festival goers will experience the lifestyle and culture of the Pacific through bustling markets and high energy performances presented in a uniquely Pacific way.

Emphasis on Sunday will be the celebration of the fellowship and the spiritual values of the Pacific peoples. Families and communities are invited to participate in a multi-denominational service, share food and enjoy cultural performances across the park.

ATEED and Suburban Newspapers, part of the Fairfax Media Mighty A Network, will fund-raise at this year’s festival with proceeds donated to Make a Wish New Zealand. This charitable organisation supports children with life threatening illnesses.

Pasifika Festival offers something for everyone and is a great way to experience the unique cultures from our neighbouring Pacific Islands.

About The Author

Sometimes when a business is growing, it needs a little help.

Right now Kaniva News provides a free, politically independent, bilingual news service for readers around the world that is absolutely unique. We are the largest New Zealand-based Tongan news service, and our stories reach Tongans  wherever they are round the world. But as we grow, there are increased demands on Kaniva News for translation into Tongan on our social media accounts and for the costs associated with expansion. We believe it is important for Tongans to have their own voice and for Tongans to preserve their language, customs and heritage. That is something to which we are strongly committed. That’s why we are asking you to consider sponsoring our work and helping to preserve a uniquely Tongan point of view for our readers and listeners.
