The Fijian public figure and political organizer Maciu Navakasuasua who sought protection status in Australia after his alleged involvement in the May 2000 coup is ordered to leave the country immediately.
In a letter from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship on December 14 last year Mr Navakasuasua was told that his “application for protection was not granted because he failed to meet the criteria for a ministerial intervention in his case”.
In 1999 Mr Navakasuasua admitted that he was hired by two business men to assassinate Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudry on his way to International Airport.
Mr Navakasuasua was depicted by Fijian media as a whistle-blower after he met Military Commander Commodore Frank Bainimarama revealing him everything he knew and everyone involved in the plot to execute the 2000 coup.
After serving three years of imprisonment in the Island of Nukulau he left Fiji for Australia and while he was there he was under pseudonym Maciu Naqari.
Mr Navakasuasua claimed that his life is in danger if he is going back to Fiji and is now appealing his deportation order.
